Supplemental Security Income for Adults Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for SSI, applicants must satisfy the following conditions:

Income and resources: Applicants must have limited income and resources. The resource limit is $2,000 for individuals and $3,000 for couples, though some resources, like a home or personal vehicle, may be excluded.
Age or disability: Applicants must be either over 65, legally blind, or have a medically determinable physical or mental impairment that significantly limits their ability to perform gainful activities.
Citizenship and residency: Applicants must be U.S. citizens or qualifying aliens residing in one of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, or the Northern Mariana Islands.

Defining "Disability" by the SSA

The Social Security Administration (SSA) defines a "disability" as a condition that prevents an individual from engaging in substantial gainful activity (SGA) due to a medically determinable physical or mental impairment.

This impairment must be expected to result in death or last for at least 12 consecutive months. The severity of the condition and the inability to perform prior work or any other substantial employment are key factors considered by the SSA.
